Discover your city on two wheels and pick up tips on cycling safely and with confidence with a free session. Learn new skills and receive assurance from a fully qualified instructor.

Free to anyone living, working or studying in London, sessions are tailored to your needs and held at a time and location to suit you. There are four sessions available – find one that suits you.

There are four Cycle Skills sessions available.

Basic cycle skills

Learn to cycle with a free session tailored to you. You’ll practice in a safe, off-road environment with a fully qualified instructor. In a session you’ll learn the basics, build skills and gain confidence to navigate around your local area.

Urban cycle skills

Improve your cycling skills and confidence with a free session tailored to you. You’ll start in a safe, off-road environment to refresh your cycling technique and develop new skills before moving on to practice on quiet roads. Your qualified instructor will support you throughout to help you cycle more confidently.

Advanced cycle skills

Commute smarter and cycle further this summer with a free one-to-one advanced cycle skills session from a fully qualified trainer. Improve your performance when dealing with complex junctions, heavy traffic or cycling at night and receive assurance that you are cycling efficiently and effectively. Sessions are tailored to your needs and fully funded by TfL.

Family cycle skills

Gain confidence and learn skills to cycle as a family with a free family cycling session. In the session a qualified instructor will teach you how to cycle with children, using quiet routes and parks. These sessions offer the opportunity to build on, or prepare for, Bikeability skills taught in schools.

Met Police

Exchanging Places

The Met Police are working to help cyclists understand the dangers of cycling around HGVs and to encourage mutual understanding on the roads in London. Find out more about Exchanging places with this video:

Bike Marking and Registering

The Met Police are also running free Bike marking and registering events to help people in London keep their bikes safe. For more information about forthcoming bike marking events, visit the website

Santander Cycles

Santander Cycle Hire

Santander Cycles is London’s self service, bike sharing scheme for short journeys.

Customers can saddle up anywhere from Shepherd’s Bush to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and Wandsworth Town to Camden Town.

You don’t need to be a member – just hire a bike with your bank card, ride it where you like and return it to any docking station ready for the next person.

  • Available 24 hours a day, every single day of the year
  • Choose from more than 11,000 bikes at over 700 docking stations
  • With docking stations every 300 – 500 metres, you should never be far away from a bike.

Costs start from £2 for 24 hour bike access including unlimited rides of under 30 minutes.

If you have a smartphone then download the official Santander Cycles app which gives you a bike release code straight to your smartphone, so you can skip straight past the terminal to the docking point.
