Cycling in York

York is a great place to cycle, and now there are even more opportunities to get out and about on your bike in the area.

This year York is hosting a big city Sky Ride and a series of Sky Ride Locals – organised rides supported by British Cycling Ride Leaders. Keep an eye out for Social Cycling Groups, and Breeze bike rides for women too!

York is regarded as one of the country's premier cycling cities. It has an extensive network of off-road cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes for cyclists of all ages and abilities to enjoy. Ample cycle parking is provided throughout the city, including several sites within the pedestrianised city centre.

York Council, in partnership with iTravel York and Adult and Community Education, are offering the following two Bike Maintence courses2 hour Bike Safety – Essential Checks and Repairs, 5 hour Basic Courses and 6 hour Advanced Courses.

Similar to Cycling City York, i-Travel York is a partnership project, run alongside a range of organisations within the city, with the council leading to co-ordinate a whole city approach. To maximise the benefits of the existing high quality cycling, walking and public transport networks in the city, such as the hugely successful Park and Ride network. It will also ensure integration of the infrastructure improvements provided from sources such as the Local Transport Plan, Access York and the Better Bus Area Fund programme.

Get Cycling is a registered community interest company and the largest independent bicycle shop in York. For the last ten years they have promoted cycling across the UK through bike try-out events, bike loan programmes and health challenges and have put almost a million people on bikes. From their base on the bike path network they sell, rent out and repair cycles.
