Sky Ride Local in Birmingham

If you're fairly confident on your bike on dirt and gravel surfaces and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Off-Road Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, there is barely a metre of tarmac in sight on these rides so come and enjoy the scrunch of gravel and the squelch of mud under your tyres with us! Rides are between 6 and 15 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour.

This is a beautiful route through the wonderful and picturesque Cannock Chase. During our 7 mile journey we follow the Fairoak Trail away from Birches Valley and the Go Ape tree-top course (riding underneath all the climbing nets and zip wires is an amazing experience!) The route then follows the Sherbrook Trail, heading towards Pepper Slade and through a campsite called Tackeroo, which was home to an extensive Army Training Camp housing troops during the First World War. There are plenty of picnic tables if we need to stop, and there's a great café at the Cannock Chase Visitor Centre and at Birches Valley to help you stock up on those cakes to keep you going. This is a truly lovely place to see and there are loads more cycle routes available for your next cycling trip!

Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Barry Cooke
Barry Cooke Hi I love to cycle and own 2 bikes,my main bike is a road bike but also love a bit of mountain biking in Cannock Chase . As a child I rode my bike everywhere but it wasn't till about 6 years ago I got the bug back and now im hooked. Ive done sportives and charity rides and im planning to ride my first 100 miles later in the year with a fellow sky rider, if i can get the training in . My first year with sky rides I did 13 and loved it so much, meeting new faces making new friends, riding places I never knew where out there, I decided to become a Sky ride Leader and give back to others the benefits I gained and the confidence it gave to me to ride more. I have also just qualified as a route planner for sky so looking to get some new routes planned in the area, also im an off road leader with some exciting routes coming soon and with the ride strong plus+ coming your way there's no better time to join me,so Im hoping to meet loads more people this year and share the enjoyment of riding in a group no matter what the weather, so lets get riding and see you all soon.
  • Mir Zaman
Mir Zaman Hello everyone, I've been involved with these rides both as a participant and as Ride Leader for a few years now. I enjoy cycling in general to keep fit and try to include a long ride at least once in the week. As for this ride - I look forward to meeting you and sharing the same cycling experience. We'll have some fun out on two wheels, get to know some new areas or two and embrace the early morning 'fresh air' for a change... Ride well with care and remember to make a point of being 'seen' if riding on the road..!!!
  • Robert Maskell
Robert Maskell Hello my name is Rob. I have been cycling since my teens. My main interest is cycle touring, I was a member of West Bromwich CTC for a number of years. I really enjoyed the Sunday morning club runs and the weekends away youth hosteling. Now my cycling consists of day rides to local beauty spots covering around 40 miles, and cycling off road exploring the tracks and trails of the Wyre Forest and Cannock Chase, and of course leading Sky rides. I like to do all of the maintenance and repairs to my bikes myself. I currently have two bikes, a GT that I use for off road and a Ridgeback that I use for road work. Well I hope to see you out on a local Sky ride soon
