Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Andy Smith
Andy Smith This is now the 4th year I have been a Leader and Route Planner. This initiative has been great for getting people either back into cycling or starting from almost scratch. I am pleased to be a Leader again and look forward to some great riding over the coming months. I am a Paramedic by day job, also a National Standards Cycle Instructor and a Public Safety Cycling Instructor.
  • Colin Reed
Colin Reed Hello everyone, this is my third year as a British Cycling Ride Leader. I'm here to encourage and help you build up your cycling confidence. Why? Because just a few years ago I was a real novice, yet to discover the great outdoors on a bike! As a boy I used to ride around a lot, but sadly I didn't carry on. Many years later I taught my own children how to ride. I also occasionally commuted by bike in London. Years later in 2011 I bought a hybrid road bike and began commuting regularly a few miles each way to work. I discovered the fresh morning air and it gave me a great start to the day! It wasn't easy at first but I wanted to get fit, and after a few weeks it got much easier. Months later I tried cycling further than 10 miles and it really boosted my confidence. So I tried some beginner rides with a cycling club and went much further than I ever imagined possible. And I loved riding through the countryside! Since then I've gone on to do many club rides, sportives, and two long distance charity bike rides raising £32,000. The longest was 450 miles from Paris to Birmingham via London. It seems unbelievable to me, but if I can do it then anyone can! Looking forward to meeting you. Enjoy your cycling and stay safe!
  • Mark Whiteman
Mark Whiteman Hi, this is my second year as a Sky ride leader. I have always enjoyed playing and coaching sports throughout my younger years. I turned to cycling has my main sport when injury prevented me from taking part in other sports. I enjoy meeting new people and what better way to do than on a Sky ride and you get fitter too.
  • Gareth Somers
Gareth Somers Hello 'Sky Riders' I came back to cycling some several years ago starting with an eight mile Sunday morning ride. This was to get fit for my first thirty two mile charity ride. Then I truly got the bug, and I joined the Skyride Team in 2013. I love to see the enjoyment people get, both young and old, from getting out on their bikes and exploring the countryside. I hope you enjoy your 2015 Skyride as much as the ride leaders do, we are all looking forward to seeing and spreading the word of how much fun cycling can be. Lets hope the sun shines this summer on our Sky Rides in 2015. Ride safe, Gareth
