Sky Ride Local in Leicester

You don't have to be the next Bradley Wiggins, but you'll need to know your way around a bike and be fairly fit to take part in our Challenging rides. If you're comfortable riding with other people and fancy a fresh challenge, these rides are perfect for you. They start at around twenty miles long, and are paced at between 11 and 12 miles an hour.

A superb half day tour of the quaint villages and countryside to the south-west of Leicester. This 29 mile route escapes Leicester via the excellent Great Central Way, a traffic-free former railway route. The route then joins a backroad loop taking in Blaby, Willoughby Waterleys, Ashby Magna and Dunton Bassett before reaching its most southerly point at Ullesthorpe, where a possible cake stop awaits at the garden centre cafe. After tea and cakes you'll head north on the quiet lanes across open farmland, passing through Frolesworth, Broughton Astley and Cosby, eventually reaching Whetston, where you'll retrace your tyre marks north on the Great Central Way to the finish at the Quay.

Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Mike Vybiral
Mike Vybiral I've been organising and leading bike rides in S.E. Leicestershire for a number of years. For example: 'Summer Cycling', fortnightly 5, 15 & 25 mile rides on Wednesday evenings from the Fox & Goose, Illston-on-the-Hill; 'Macmillan Harborough 100', a 100k charity ride from the Langton Brewery, Thorpe Langton, (which raised £7,500); 'Welland Wonders', a choice of 50, 100 & 160k rides from Husbands Bosworth, which raises £500 for a range of charities. I'm also a member of the Welland Valley Cycle Club, which organises a whole range of bike-related activities for all ages, in and around the Harborough area. • Gina Vaughan
Gina Vaughan Whether commuting, racing, leisure rides, touring or personal challenges. Alone or in a group. I don't always love it but I'm always glad I did it. Hopefully through the Sky Ride scheme more people will see and feel the benefits of getting on their bike.
  • Phil Broxton
Phil Broxton I am a mental health nurse and have been a cub scout leader, who has enjoyed cycling from an early age. I used to use my bike to commute and had the opportunity to participate in the London to Brighton Bike Ride with a team from the hospital where I worked in 1996. Since this time, I have been involved in sharing my passion for cycling with friends, family and collegaues.
