Breeze Bike Rides in Wandsworth

A pretty nine mile, mostly flat ride, along the river from Wandsworth to Hammersmith Bridge and back again.

We start at Wandsworth Common, using back roads and shared cycle/pedestrian paths to avoid the busy Wandsworth one way system and take us through Wandsworth Park along the Thames to Putney Bridge.  Here we will walk our bikes over the busy A3 and down to Putney Embankment (start point for the Oxford-Cambridge boat race), from where we have a lovely scenic ride past the rowing clubs and then along the off-road Thames Path to Hammersmith Bridge.

We will walk our bikes over Hammersmith Bridge, and then potter along the back roads on the Fulham side of the river, passing the River Cafe and Fulham Football Ground before enjoying views of the river again in Bishops Park.

From Putney Bridge, we will take back roads round the Hurlingham Club, before crossing Wandsworth Bridge on the cycle path, and finishing with a cafe stop at the Birdhouse Cafe at 123 St John's Hill, next to the London Cycle Workshop.

This ride is best suited to hybrid or mountain bikes, due to the off-road section from Putney to Hammersmith.

Wrap up warm (it's winter - do bring full finger gloves and wear warm socks.  Consider headband or helmet liner to keep your ears warm under your helmet).

It's a good idea to bring some water and you may also want to bring a snack. Wearing a helmet is advisable; if you don’t have one please do not worry you can still take part.  If you enjoy the bike ride and would like to come again perhaps you could look to buy one then.

Everyone’s welcome – look forward to seeing you there!

Meet the Champions

  • Judith Kent
Judith Kent When I hit 40, I got my family to buy me my first bike in 20 years so I could start commuting to work - with two small children at home it was the only way I could see to get some exercise into my daily routine.

With the kids a little older, I then found I loved the cycling and wanted to do more - but got a bit bored going out on rides by myself. So I trained as a Breeze Champion and have really enjoyed getting out and exploring the parks and commons of South West London in company with other women.

My rides start on either Wandsworth or Clapham Common, are always at a gentle pace, fit within school hours (for juggling mums like me) and finish with coffee at a local cafe.

My profile picture shows me crossing the finish line at the Cycletta sportive on the Sussex Downs in September 2012. Five of us (complete sportive novices) from my regular Breeze rides thought we would give it a try, and we all made it round the 25 hilly miles.....what a sense of achievement.....Breeze rides can take you to unexpected places...!

Jill Dicker-Solderer I love riding my bike and encouraging other women to take up two wheels! Our rides are friendly and all about having fun! Look forward to seeing you on a Breeze ride soon!
  • Michelle Miller
Michelle Miller Having lived in Manhattan and Central London, it is just in the last few years that I've started cycling again. At first, this meant just around my SW London neighborhood as a way to get around faster and then longer rides to Richmond Park. I so enjoyed the Breeze rides led by a fellow school mum, I decided to become a rider leader to keep sharing the thrill that comes with two wheels. My husband is a keen cyclist and we are excited as our two boys start to join us.

    See you soon!
    Michelle
