Sky Ride Local in Manchester

If you’re fairly confident on your bike on dirt and gravel surfaces and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Off-Road Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, there is barely a metre of tarmac in sight on these rides so come and enjoy the scrunch of gravel and the squelch of mud under your tyres with us! Rides are between 6 and 15 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour.

This mainly level ride follows the Bridgewater Canal into one of the most picturesque towns in the outskirts of Manchester, with timber framed houses and two busy marinas along our route, there is always something to look at and admire. There will be chance for a bite to eat before heading back using Route 55 of the National Cycling Network which follows a disused railway line.  This really is a great off-road ride that will make you feel like you are nowhere near one of the biggest cities in the north.

Please note if heavy rain has persisted the trail will be muddy (and therefore lots more fun) so be advised to bring appropraite attire.

leaders great, route not so great. too many gates to lift over and very slow along towpath and back along East Lancs
  4. Tony Jones Monday 25th August
A nice flat canal side ride at the start, with it being a canal tow path it does have a few gates and stiles to lift your bike over but these are easy to negotiate. It meanders past the boats and wildlife along the canal to a nice canal side pub where we stopped for a while. It then left the canal to join route 55 a quiet traffic free leafy green path again nice and flat passing the golf course on your right. Leaving route 55 you pick up the cycle lane on the A580 East Lancs Road for the mainly downhill run back down to the start venue. A great circular ride with no hills to climb. The canal towpath can get a bit muddy and wet in places but that added to the fun. One i'll go back too for sure !
