Sky Ride Ipswich gives the Tour of Britain a big send off
Published 9 September 2012
Today has been a Sky Ride event to remember. Not only did 12,000 people enjoy a brilliant traffic-free 5km route around a gloriously sunny Ipswich, but they also waved off Team Sky as they embarked on Britain’s biggest bike race – the Tour of Britain.
To celebrate and support Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and the other Team Sky riders, we brought some very special activities to Sky Ride Ipswich. Inspired residents had the chance to take on a Team Sky challenge and try to beat Wiggins’ Time Trial time – on a static bike. Riders signed autographs and chatted to fans, and a few lucky supporters even got a tour of the Team Sky bus.
There was a whole host of entertainment all around the route, and activity areas at the Customs House, Alderman Park and the Cornhill Forecourt which delighted riders as they rode around the route.
Children of all ages also showed their support for Team Sky with face paints inspired by team colours. Almost 100 youngsters also had a go at racing their bikes throughout the day thanks to Go-Ride Racing, British Cycling's exciting entry level competition programme.
Don't forget if you want to keep riding, Sky Ride Local rides in Ipswich are in full swing. From a leisurely bike ride for all the family to a Tour of Britain inspired 40 mile uphill challenge there really is something for everyone.
