Sky Ride Hull a big success in the sunshine
The 6km route, which formed a continuous loop around the city and allowed riders to join at any point, saw 5,000 riders of all ages and abilities enjoying the day.
Paralympic silver medallist Jonallan Butterworth (pictured above, at the start of the event) met cyclists, signed bibs and posed for photos with delighted cyclists.
When the riders weren’t taking in the city in the saddle, there was lots to do and see at Queen Victoria Square and Queens Gardens including free bike hire, the Scrapstore bike decorators, Bobs Bikes repair centre, touch rugby and a Bikeability training area.
Not content with that, the vibrant Humber Street area hosted its electic market, which was open all day offering some great bargains and even better coffee!
For those riders who experienced some technical or mechanical difficulties, experts from Halfords were on hand to make sure everyone was able to get free repairs and safety checks to their bikes, and Jaffa kept everyone fuelled and refreshed at the Bike Café with free fruit, as well as reflectors, ponchos and Tesco vouchers.
‘It’s been a fantastic day,’ said British Cycling’s Regional Manager Mel Hudson. ‘With less than a year to go until the Tour de France 2014 Grand Depart in Yorkshire, there’s never been a better time to get involved. I hope everyone who has attended today is inspired to keep riding and will be encouraged to join a Sky Ride Local ride near them.’
'We had great weather for the third year in a row at Hull, there was so many bikes and it was great to see so many families. Our activation zones were packed full!' she added.
'A big thank you to Jonallan Butterworth for coming along, too - everyone was delighted to share the day with a Paralympic medallist!'
