Sky Ride Bournemouth lights up town
Published 21 July 2013
The centre of Bournemouth was transformed into a ‘grand prix style’ race circuit yesterday as 4,100 people cycled around the town’s streets in glorious sunshine.
Sky Ride returned to Bournemouth to encourage people of all ages and abilities to jump on their bikes and enjoy the traffic-free bike ride. This year’s event took place for the first time in the evening, lending a very special atmosphere boosted by loads of fun and interactive activities. The evening came to a close with a ‘Nightglow Procession’, Bournemouth’s first ever bike light spectacular. Adults and children alike lit up their bikes and donned their best fancy dress costumes, and prizes were awarded for ‘best dressed rider’ and ‘most unique and interesting bike.’
Brian Johnston, British Cycling’s Recreation Manager for the South West, said: ‘It was spectacular to see so many cyclists getting involved in the event and lighting up the streets around Bournemouth like never before! The weather was very kind to us, and the sun brought a real festival atmosphere to the day.’
There are plenty of ways to get involved in cycling in Bournemouth. British Cycling and Sky are also bringing Sky Ride Local rides to the area, as well as Social Cycling Groups and Breeze bike rides for women. Find out more and join a ride in Bournemouth.
