Local Cycling Hero: John McCracken

Local Cycling Heroes

Winner in Scotland: John McCracken from Kilmarnock

Retired teacher John, whose self-proclaimed mission is ‘to keep the bicycle wheels of Ayrshire turning smoothly’, was one of our most nominated entrants. An enthusiastic but modest cycle leader, he has trained children and adults alike in bike riding skills, and led numerous cycle challenges, including taking a group of pupils and staff on an epic journey by bike from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

‘Mr McCracken has made me more confident in myself, making me realise what I can achieve.’

He still maintains his old school’s fleet of 30 bikes, recycles donated bikes so others can use them, and is currently training to be a trackside marshal at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow. ‘He has truly inspired me,’ said Maureen Hyslop, while Mary Morris adds: ‘Mr McCracken has made me more confident in myself, making me realise what I can achieve.’
