Bradford's brilliant bike ride

Sky Ride Bradford 2012

With only a few weeks to go until the biggest sporting event the UK has ever seen, Bradford joined in the celebrations today as 7,000 people took part in Sky Ride Bradford.

With the summer officially in full swing, it proved the perfect opportunity for the people of Bradford to experience their city from a two wheeled perspective. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, in full regalia, got the event off to an official start at 10.30am, and then there was a chance for people of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes and enjoy a ride with friends and family. This year's new traffic-free route took in Bradford’s most iconic landmarks, including the picturesque Lister Park where Bradford Council's play activities were busy all day. The new Mirror Pool in City Park (see below) was also a fun addition for people who didn't mind getting their wheels wet!

'It's been a wonderful day,' said British Cycling's Regional Recreation Manager Dan Goodey. 'We've seen so many families, young people, and all sorts of people out on their bikes enjoying the city. There's been great live music and free entertainment for all the family and we're thrilled so many people came down and joined in.'

Dan added: 'It’s the perfect introduction to our Sky Ride Local rides that are happening all over Bradford right now. If you’ve been inspired to get out on your bike, they’re a great way to have fun, explore and meet fellow cyclists.'
