5,500 people today joined TV star Gethin Jones, and Team Sky’s Russell Downing (pictured above) for the first ever Sky Ride Hull. Cyclists of all ages and abilities took to traffic-free streets for the chance to enjoy the city on their bikes.

The free event, hosted by British Cycling and Sky, in partnership with Hull City Council, allowed riders to take in a 6.2km route at their own pace whilst enjoying some of Hull’s most well-known landmarks including: Queen’s Gardens, Queen Victoria Square, The Guildhall, Trinity Church, The Marina and The Deep. Participants were treated to a whole host of activities and entertainment throughout the day along the route, including Go-Ride racing for under-16s, performances from local buskers and BMX demonstrations.

Sky Ride Ambassador Gethin Jones commented: “It’s been a fantastic day here at Sky Ride Hull, with people of all ages getting back on their bikes and enjoying cycling around the town on traffic-free streets. I just hope that all 5,500 people that have taken part today will be inspired to start cycling more regularly and continue to have fun on two wheels.”

Corin Dimopoulos, Sky’s Director of Cycling, said: “I’m delighted Sky Ride has come to Hull this year and that so many people of all ages and abilities have been able to enjoy cycling through the town. Through our great partnership with Hull Borough Council and British Cycling, we hope to build towards our aim of getting one million more Britons cycling regularly by the end of 2013.”

The Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Colin Inglis, said: “Hull prides itself on being a cycle friendly city, but rarely do we see so many cyclists together. Even if you weren't on a bike, there was lots of great entertainment for families."

Following the excitement of the big city ride, Hull residents are invited to join Sky Ride Local, a series of free local led-rides running every Sunday through the summer in and around Hull, which take in everything from the countryside to local sights.

As well as taking part in Sky Ride Hull, local residents are also being asked to take part in a nation-wide poll and nominate their favourite hill to cycle down in the region. Backed by multiple world and Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy, the nationwide search will see the ultimate cycling descent being crowned the UK’s Perfect Hill. Entrants are asked to take in to consideration location, view, where the hill takes them, historical resonance and most importantly what the hill means to them. To nominate yours, click here.
