Newport is a great place to cycle, and now there are even more opportunities to get out and about on your bike in the area.

This year Newport is hosting a series of friendly neighbourhood Sky Ride Local rides. They’re all free to join, and it’s easy to register.

Sky Ride Local rides are fun, free community bike rides that offer a great way of getting out and exploring your local area and meeting like-minded people.

Facilities

Manchester Velodrome

Newport is home to the Wales National Velodrome, one of only three internationally-recognised indoor velodromes in Britain. With 250m of spectacularly banked cycle track, excellent facilities for all the family and regular competitions and performances taking place, you’re bound to find something to suit you. If you’re interested in track cycling, but don’t know where to start, sessions are available for casual riders and complete novices to more epxerienced riders, all with a qualified coach.

Where to ride

Newport is a hidden gem when it comes to cycling, with dozens of breath-taking opportunities to sample the beautiful Celtic culture for all levels of cyclist.

Newport has something to offer for every level of cyclist – from urban city routes to miles of rural countryside that surround the city, mountain bike trails and the Wales National Velodrome. With all this and more, there are dozens of opportunities to experience the diversity of Welsh culture, history and natural beauty on a bike.

National Cycle Network – a network of cycle routes across Wales featuring traffic-free paths, quiet roads and lanes.

Celtic Trail – a 377 mile route from Chepstow, through Newport, and onwards to Swansea, mostly traffic-free.

Cwmcarn Forest Drive – a scenic route through the rolling hills and green mountains of one the country's largest urban forests also with an exhilarating single-track mountain bike trail.

There are some great on- and off-road riding in Newport from the rolling country roads and paths of Abergavenny, and along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal to rugged off-road trails in the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and across the South Wales Valleys.
