Champion of the Month - Ruth Crawford

Launch of Breeze Basingstoke

This month, our Champion of the Month is Ruth Crawford from Breeze Network Basingstoke.

Ruth trained as a Breeze champion in October and set up ‘Breezingstoke’ aka Breeze Network Basingstoke. She has organised 27 rides in the Basingstoke and Deane area and introducing cycling to a number of women in the area. Ruth has engaged with lots of different groups in her community through inviting the local media and MP on her ride. Ruth has also helped her friend Maggie become a Breeze champion and helped organise her first Breeze bike ride.

Ruth has ran closed rides for her local Weight Watchers group, joined forces with her local charity ride and has a relationship with her local children’s centre to help mums get active on their bikes with children.

The Minister for Disabled People and local Basingstoke MP, Maria Miller has joined Ruth on one of her rides and said: “I was really interested to hear about the Breeze Basingstoke programme and the great work that it is doing to help more young women get involved in cycling for fun.

“The fact that Breeze Basingstoke and Bunnies Children’s Centre have combined resources to provide a crèche facility means that the programme is accessible to mums with pre-school children.”

The mother-of-three added: “I know from my own experience how enjoyable it is to be able to cycle together as a family and that is another benefit that the mums taking part in Breeze Basingstoke will be able to look forward to as their children get older.”

We think Ruth is an inspiration and we love her idea on how to get more women on a bike – thanks for your support, Ruth.
